Contrasts - Toga AW23
This season Toga brought us back to east London to present the label’s AW23 collection as models stood against a backdrop of glass panes and the city skyline from the lofty heights of 100 Shoreditch. For AW23 designer Yasuko Furuta looked at contrasts, simultaneously exploring the sensation of liberation from constraints and comfort and protection with garments revealing typically hidden elements that invited the body outside.
The Japanese brand, founded in 1997, is best known for its avant-guard designs that meld classic and contemporary elements with previous collections characterised by oversized silhouettes and details like asymmetrical hems and bold prints.
Season upon season, Toga draws a large expectant crowd, and this presentation was no exception as designs played with detailing, looking at the elements of dress that are conventionally concealed like ‘magazine pockets’ placed as a central feature in mirrored fabric. While other materials and details, ranging from faux fur trims, pleated skirts, leather trousers and cropped puffas, utilised repurposed materials and shirts, were manipulated, playing with conventional aesthetics becoming outerwear, and tied details that exposed skin. The palette was more muted this season, and with an amalgamation of tailored and flowing silhouettes, it demonstrated Yasuko Furuta’s undisputed proficiency as a designer of innovative contemporary wear.
